Dear Parents At last a newsletter ! As you will appreciate, I have been rather preoccupied with secretarial duties which take up an inordinate amount of time ! However, there is an upside, I’m a whiz at the lunch monies and numbers ! There is a fair amount of information which I would like to pass on to you, so without further ado…we’ll get on. School Secretary : We have appointed a new secretary to replace Mrs Salisbury, and she is Mary Horsburgh, who is one of the school secretaries at Dunbar Primary School. She will starting with us on 1st. December and brings with her a great deal of experience. I’m sure that parents will find that she is very efficient and I’m sure she will become a valuable member of our team. After School Arts & Crafts Club : I have secured the services of an Arts tutor on Wednesday afternoon until Christmas to run an after school club for P2. We kicked off this week with charcoal….and some great drawings were produced. The tutor is Ewan Wilson, whom I taught a long time ago! It’s a small world…but I wouldn’t want to paint it ! Christmas Fayre : It’s almost that time again ! The fayre this year is on the 6th. December at the school. Usual time of 10am until 12pm. If you have a raffle prize or something for the bottle stall please send it to school and we will pass it on to the PTA. Milk Money : The next block of milk money is required on Monday 17th. £2.75 is required for the next period. If you have already paid please ignore this reminder. I have ordered milk for those children who have expressed an interest in starting. Please check with your child whether or not they have asked for milk. Nursery : The Nursery have been having visits from People who help Us in the shape of RNLI, the Fire Service and Police. The children have enjoyed the visits, especially having a go with a fire hose. Check out the website for pictures and movies. Nursery : The Nursery children will be visiting the Happy Gang on the 10th. December. Panto : P1-P7 will be off to Edinburgh on the 17th.. December to see Jack and the Beanstalk. Please remember it will be a late return…approx 5.30pm – 6pm. Football : The boys kick off their season with a game against Pencaitland on the 26th. November. I’m sure that they will have success this year !! Earth & Space : Jim Bryden, one of the Science teachers from the Grammar School, visited us to work with P4/5/6 on rocks, part of their Earth and Space Project. Choir : We have been asked to send some children along to Belhaven Hospital near to Christmas to sing carols. Mrs Gracie has kindly taken on the job of putting a choir together. Perhaps you will hear them at the closing assembly. Closing Assembly : To give you early warning…the closing assembly will be on the final day of the term, Friday 19th. December at 11.30am. Santa’s Setback : Miss Leslie and Miss Trail are working with P2/3/4 on their Christmas musical Santa’s Setback. It’s already sounding very good. Details of dates and times will be with you in the near future. Enrolement : We are at that time when we are thinking of the enrolement for next session. Please keep a watch on the local press for details, but our Nursery parents have been informed. Miss Inglis : Miss Inglis will be leaving us for a short time to work in Yester Primary ( Gifford ). She is taking part in a job swap and Mrs Theresa Laing will be joining our staff. This arrangement is for the Spring term and is part of Continuing Professional Development to allow both teachers to have experience in a different environment. Mrs Laing is a very experienced teacher whom I have known for many years. Mrs Laing will be following the plans which Miss Inglis has prepared for the class. We think that it will be a worthwhile experience for them both, and we are sure that our pupils will enjoy working with Mrs Laing. That’s it for this month Yours sincerely

Dear Parents
Welcome to what might be the last newsletter of the session. The HMI have come and gone and we survived intact ( just about ). Thank you to all who filled in their questionnaires, took the time to talk to the Inspectors, and supported the staff throughout a trying and stressful week. The HMI seemed generally happy with the education being provided in the school, but of course there are one or two areas for improvement, which is only to be expected. The report will not be published until September/October.
Events : There are a number of dates for your diary : 10th. June – P6/7 to Edinburgh for a RSNO concert: 11th. June – P6/7 visit to DGS; P2/3/4 visit John Muir Country Park with Mr Bryden ( Science Teacher DGS ) : 14th. June – P7 at DGS all day; Transition Day for classes in school : 15th June – P7 at DGS all day : 16th. June -P4/5/6/7 to visit Dirleton Castle and Yellowcraig ; Nursery Consultations : 17th. June – End of Term ( 12.30pm ) Dinglin’ Oot ! ; Mr Lavery goes to Australia ( although he says, “ I’ll be back ! ” )
Staff : Mrs Gracie will be leaving us at the end of the term to take up a permanent position at Stoneyhill Primary in Musselburgh. We will be very sad to see her go as she has done a terrific job in her time here. We wish her all the best and thanks! At the time of writing all other staff are returning next session and we have been informed that we will have a probationer teacher to team up with Mrs Brogden. HMI : You will notice that the school now has a perimeter fence. This was specifically requested by the HMI under the area of child safety. We will now be known as Gulag Westibarnio! Nursery : At the same time that the school had inspection the Nursery had the Care Commission and the HMI paying a visit. Thank you to parents who filled their questionnaires ( again ! ) and supported the Nursery staff. As we already know our Nursery is a beacon of good practice and our children receive a wonderful start to their time in West Barns ( and Stenton and Dunbar ). This will be reflected in the report. Well done to Mrs D’Arcy-Burt and Mrs MacDonald ! Classes : On the reverse of this letter you will find the provisional class lists for session 2004/5. In compiling the classes we have taken account the ages of the children; maturity; social and friendship factors; and additional support needs. Pupils will continue to be educated in their current groupings which will involve movement between classes. This practice was commended by HMI. If you have any concerns or simply want to clarify reasons for your child’s allocation please contact me at the school and I will be happy to discuss the matter with you. I stress these are provisional classes and they are subject to change although I would envisage that they will remain pretty much as published. Assuming that this is the last newsletter may I thank you on behalf of all the staff for your continued support throughout the session, and wish you all a sunny summer ! Yours sincerely David Wharton www.westbarnsprimaryschool.com
