What is Determined to Succeed?

Determined to Succeed is designed to help young people adopt a ‘can-do, will-do’ approach to the world around them.  It’s not about creating the next generation of entrepreneurs, although some young people will take that route. It’s about a route to a more enterprising, successful Scotland, where all our young people understand the contribution they can make, to their schools, and beyond that, to their communities and to the wider economy: we want them to become enterprising employees and employers. And for those young people that need additional support, we want to make the prospect of making this sort of contribution both desirable and realistic.

How do we do this?

Determined to Succeed gives pupils a chance to take responsibility for their own learning. It helps them reflect on their strengths, passions and abilities; it helps them understand what works best for them; and it provides the support they need to make the most of those qualities.  Schools and businesses are working together to show young people the practical relevance of what they are learning, encouraging them to think in enterprising ways through a wide range of activities.

What are we doing at West Barns?

At West Barns Primary, we have adopted this approach through work already taking place in school and have incorporated enterprising activities into our science and environmental studies topics in class.  Examples of this are:

·          Anti litter campaign

·          Jacobite show

·          Roman Feast

·          Healthy Tuck Shop

·          Toast Cafe

In the following pages, you will see examples of work being carried out in the school under the Determined to Succeed Banner.  These pages are being updated by Primary 6 children in keeping with the idea of Determined to Succeed.
